Media Literacy in the 21st Century classroom explores the key concepts of media literacy using popular forms of media that are relevant to young people today. It also gives numerous examples of media from television, films, commercials and it helps the audience understand how they're being influenced by media. Memorizing simple facts and information are skills from the 20th century and have changed. The 21st century is the era of information overload, so the 21st century citizen needs to learn how access, analyze, evaluate and create information and so called facts. Media literacy helps people be critical of the information they receive (if they are properly media literate). That being said comes many questions about Media Literacy and Mass Media. One of those questions--is the Mass Media's influence on the world too strong for some?? "The real Mass Media are basically trying to divert people" - Noam Chomsky. I think Chomsky said it best in that quote.
I found this (short and to the point) video while browsing around on youtube. This video was a homemade project a student made to explain the influence of Mass Media on the public. For a small English project, I must say that this kid created a pretty good video about the media. The pictures and quotes from Chomsky he uses all are so relevant and true to the point he is trying to make about the significant influence the media has on the world. I love how he ends the video with the picture of all of the news affiliates and the sentence "who is the real enemy". He basically leaves the viewers questioning themselves on if they are highly influenced by what the see, hear and read in the media or not.
We all know that there are people out there who form strong opinions of certain subjects based solely on what they saw or head in the media. As a result, these people clearly can show signs of biased behavior and also signs of being media illiterate because they are not properly using the media. They are taking into context ONE view of opinion to form their own strong opinion which is not the best way to go about creating and analyzing what you seen in the media.
This video slightly portrays how some people are significantly influenced by the media-some in good ways; others in bad ways.
